This is the fourth institute set up in Qingdao after the Virtual Reality Research Institute, Microelectronics Research Institute, Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Research Institute of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Beihang Qingdao New Materials Technology Research Institute has begun construction since October 2016, and has gathered top talent teams in the field of materials led by Academician Xu Huibin of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Lin Jianguo, Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and Ding Wenjiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Technology, new energy materials and preparation technology, liquid metal precision molding technology and intelligent equipment design and manufacturing, as well as new material application development and engineering research, in order to accelerate the transfer and transformation of scientific and technological achievements in our city, and promote advanced material technology and Industry integration, and strive to build a world-renowned, domestic first-class professional industrial technology research institute. Beihang Automotive Lightweight Material Technology Engineering Center is mainly engaged in research on high-strength and toughness aluminum-magnesium alloys and special forming technologies for automotive lightweight materials technology requirements, and builds a production demonstration base to provide strong scientific and technological support for industry development.

Replacing traditional steel materials with lightweight materials such as aluminum alloys has become an inevitable choice for automotive design upgrades. The "Automotive Lightweight Material Technology Engineering Center of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics" unveiled this time is to carry out research on high-strength and toughness aluminum-magnesium alloys and special forming methods, develop complete sets of industrialization technology, and build production demonstration bases for the needs of automotive lightweight materials technology.
